During the operation, under the influence of environment,loading, material aging and structure creep, the internalstate of the bridge will change, and the structure memberwill be susceptible to corrosion and fatigue damage, andthe global rigidity or local performance will be impaireddramatically reducing the bearing capacity of bridgesmaking it impossible to ensure the safety and durability

If these damages and internal states can be foreseen andproperly adjusted and maintained, it will be possible to keepa healthy structure and avoid the happening of disastrousaccident

The traditional detection method relies heavily on
manpower and experience, creating heavy workload, andcan not be conducted in all weathers. Besides, the
traditional detection methods do not have the effectivemeans to detect the concealed parts or continuouslymonitor parameters, therefore, they can no longer meet therequirements of safety operation and scientific managementand will gradually be replaced by the automated health andsafety monitoring technologies
